RICHMOND, Ky. - With the first scrimmage of the spring practice session under their belts, coach Roy Kidd's Eastern Kentucky University football Colonels will hold the Maroon-White Spring Game, Saturday, April 15, at 6:00 p.m. at Roy Kidd Stadium.
Eastern held a full-scale intrasquad scrimmage Sunday at the stadium, its seventh day of practice and its first scrimmage of the spring.
"I saw some good things happening out there, but, of course, we still have a lot of work to do," said Kidd as he prepares for his 37th season at the helm of the Colonel football program. "I liked the hitting and the aggressiveness of our defense.
"We had some mental errors, which you expect this early in spring drills, and our timing wasn't very good. But, I thought for the first time in a scrimmage situation, it was a good workout."
Kidd and his staff are working on getting the best athletes on the field for the Colonels' first-team units.
"We are trying to get the five best offensive linemen and the five best defensive linemen on the field for us. That is one of our goals this spring. We want to take a good look at all our players, both returning people and the redshirts, and put them in the right position for the fall," Kidd said.
All three quarterbacks saw action for the Colonels Sunday. Senior Waylon Chapman hit 4-6 passes for 72 yards and one TD; senior Chad Collins was 2-6 for two yards; and redshirt freshman Shedrick Wright was 9-17 for 46 yards.
Senior tailback Corey Crume is sitting out all contact this spring as a precautionary move because of his previous injuries. Senior tailback Maurice Clark handled the bulk of the running chores Sunday for Eastern.
Defensively, Kidd mentioned that he like what he saw out of Ball State transfer Gerald Palmer, a junior linebacker.
EKU will practice Monday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week before Saturday night's Maroon-White Game.
