MAROON-WHITE GAME SLATED FOR SATURDAY AFTERNOON

RICHMOND, Ky. -- The Eastern Kentucky University Maroon-White football game is scheduled Saturday (April 18) afternoon at 4:00 p.m. as coach Roy Kidd's EKU Colonels wind up spring drills.

It has been a busy spring for Kidd and his staff as they try and put the best player at each position getting ready for their tough 1998 schedule which will feature the University of Kentucky, Western Kentucky, Appalachian State, Kentucky State and the always-competitive Ohio Valley Conference slate.

"It's been a typical spring. One day offense clicks, the next day it's defense's turn to play well, " said Kidd as he readies for his 35th year at the helm of the Eastern football program. "It's been tough to find any consistency because we have so many of our better players out with injuries this spring.

"The good thing about this is a lot of young kids are getting a lot of experience and that's going to help down the road. I think the overall thing that concerns me is that our experienced depth is gone. That's what we will have to work on the remaining days we have this spring and then again this fall."

Kidd has been pleased with the overall work ethic of the team, despite the key players missing from action and the fact that weather has forced cancellation of some 11-on-11 scrimmages.

"Everybody is working hard to get better, but we need to work on overall team speed and improving our strength and quickness, " Kidd said.

Eastern's quarterbacks, sophomore Waylon Chapman and junior college transfer Chad Collins, are both "having their good days", according to Kidd.

"Waylon is throwing the ball good and is improving every day. We're hoping he'll start showing more leadership on the field. Collins is still learning the system, but is showing he can move the team, " Kidd said.

Kidd mentioned that junior All-Ohio Valley Conference tailback Derick Logan is running very well and making the most of getting a lot of "reps" at runningback.

"Derick is having a good spring and it was nice to see Corey Crume (sophomore tailback) back out there in pads even though he couldn't go through any contact work, " Kidd said.

Saturday's Maroon-White Spring Game will be held at Roy Kidd Stadium at 4:00 p.m. There is no charge for admission and the public is invited to attend.
