Maroon-White Spring Football Game

RICHMOND, Ky. -- Paced by an offense that generated 364 yards, the Eastern Kentucky Maroon Team (Offense) defeated the White squad 21-13 Saturday afternoon throughout a steady downpour at Roy Kidd Stadium in EKU's annual Maroon-White Spring Football Game.

The Maroon team got on the board with 6:10 left in the first quarter when senior wideout Rondel Menendez caught a 22-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Waylon Chapman but was hit on the White team's 20-yard line, fumbled the ball and it bounded into the end zone where senior wide receiver Brian Brenneman fell on it for a Maroon score. Kicker Matthew Phillips added the extra point to give the Maroon team a 7-2 lead.

(NOTE: The White Team (defense) could score points four different ways: touchdown (seven points); turnover (four points); stop a drive on four downs (three points); and stop a drive on a punt or missed field goal (one point).

The Maroon Team's Derick Logan, junior All-Ohio Valley Conference tailback, scored his team's second TD of the day on a slashing 24-yard run with 6:18 left in the second quarter. Phillips added the extra point and two defensive stops made it 14-6 Maroon at the break.

Scoring for the Maroon Team ended when junior fullback Jonathan Butler rambled 11 yards up the middle with 2:37 left in the third quarter. That quarter ended with the score 21-9. The final four points of the game came from the defense in the last stanza as the White Team on one stopped drive resulting in a punt on fourth down and one stopped drive that it held the offense on fourth down.

Freshman tailback Tim Dixon picked up 61 yards in 12 carries to lead the Maroon squad. Senior fullback Jonas Hill added 36 yards in 11 totes, Logan had 41 yards in seven carries and Butler picked up 18 yards in five carries.

Chapman was 8-14 for 129 yards, while junior college quarterback Chad Collins was 6-12 for 63 yards.

Leading receivers for the Maroon Team were sophomore split end Alexander Bannister (3 catches, 41 yards); Brenneman (2-56); Menendez (2-38); and senior tight end Tony DeGregorio (2-34).

Leading tacklers for the White team were: freshman cornerback Derrick White (5 tackles, one assist); junior linebacker Travis Schoenlaub (5T, 0A); junior tackle Jason Muchow (4T, 2A); freshman linebacker Sylvester Williams (4T, 2A); and junior defensive back Billy Wright (4T, 1A).
