COLONELS HOST INDIANA STATE SATURDAY NIGHT IN PARENTS NIGHT GAME
RICHMOND, Ky. - Coach Roy Kidd's Eastern Kentucky University Colonels return home Saturday night for a 7:00 p.m. contest at Roy Kidd Stadium with Indiana State University as EKU holds Parents Night and Kids' Night at the Game activities.
EKU saw its record drop to 1-1 on the season last Saturday when the Colonels lost 34-20 to No. 4 ranked Appalachian State. EKU was whistled for 14 penalties and committed three turnovers in the contest, including two fumbles lost that led directly to ASU touchdowns.
"You can't expect to make these kinds of mistakes against a good team and win," said Kidd. "Our kids played hard and gave a great effort, but we've got to take care of the football. Our mistakes were the difference in the game."
Two quarterbacks saw action for the Colonels last Saturday as junior Chad Collins relieved starter Waylon Chapman in the second half. In his brief stint, Collins led Eastern to two touchdowns. He ran five yards for one score and threw an 80-yard bomb to junior flanker Anthony Boggs for the other score. On the night, he was 2-4 for 87 yards
Chapman hit 14-25 passes for 165 yards and one touchdown. He also threw a six-yard TD toss to tight end Anthony Watson and was intercepted once.
"I thought both quarterbacks played well and did some good things. We'll see how things go this week, but we might end up playing them both Saturday night," Kidd said.
Senior tailback Derek Logan saw his first action of the '99 year and responded well. He led the Colonels in rushing with 63 yards in 15 carries and caught two passes for 12 yards. Junior tailback Corey Crume added 59 yards to the cause, while junior wideout Alex Bannister led EKU in pass receiving with six catches for 105 yards.
Indiana State has opened the 1999 season with losses to Division I opponents, Iowa State (33-7) and Oklahoma (49-0). The Sycamores have rushed the ball 97 times for 406 yards, while passing just 22 times in the first two games out of the option attack for 54 yards.
Sophomore quarterback Sheraton Fox leads ISU in rushing with 109 yards in 34 carries. Left halfback Jared Sessum has rushed for 78 yards in 10 carries and right halfback Matt Nelson has added 74 yards in 14 carries and leads the Sycamores in receiving with three catches for 36 yards.
ISU has given up 300 yards per game on the ground and 229 yards per contest through the air in the first two contests. Inside linebacker Mike Bandy leads ISU with 29 hits (12 tackles, 17 assists).
Defensively, the top four tacklers on the year for the Colonels are tackles Terry Thomas and Jason Muchow, linebacker Adam Rader and strong safety Scooter Asel with totals of 19, 15, 14 and 14 hits, respectively. Thomas has also collected three tackles for loss for a minus nine yards, forced a fumble and recovered a miscue. Muchow has four tackles for loss (-18 yards) and 1 ½ sacks (-12 yards.).
Eastern leads the series with Indiana State, 2-0.
