COLONEL FOOTBALL TEAM HAS OPEN DATE, UT MARTIN NEXT
RICHMOND, Ky. - Coach Roy Kidd's Eastern Kentucky University Colonels take a break from the action this week as they have an open date Saturday before returning to Ohio Valley Conference play Oct. 23 in EKU's 2:00 p.m. Homecoming date with UT Martin at Roy Kidd Stadium.
Eastern, 5-1 overall and 2-0 in OVC play, is ranked 15th, 15th and 17th in the latest I-AA polls this week. EKU, playing through a steady rain most of the game, was able to gain the measure of arch-rival Western Kentucky, 4-2 and 3-1 OVC, last Saturday night at EKU, 30-10.
EKU used a balanced offensive attack and a bend-but-don't-break defense to shut down the 'Toppers. Eastern picked up 447 yards of total offense (303 on the ground and 144 passing), while Western had 318 yards of offense, all on the ground.
"We really controlled the line of scrimmage, and we didn't let them take the ball and drive it for touchdowns on our defense. This is a really sweet win. You better believe I'm happy," said Kidd, who picked up his 291st coaching win at EKU in the process.
Junior wideout Tyrone Browning was a big part of the Colonels' success on offense as he scored on two big plays. His first trip to paydirt came on a 72-yard flanker reverse in the second quarter and then he cinched the win with a nine-yard TD catch on a third and goal situation with 13:14 remaining in the game.
On the night, he caught five passes for 40 yards and was chosen as the Farm Bureau Insurance Most Valuable Player of the Game for EKU.
EKU quarterback Waylon Chapman continued his stellar work at the controls of the Eastern offense as he hit 13-17 passes for 144 yards and one touchdown. He has now hit 80-128 passes for 1,036 yards and 11 touchdowns on the season and has a passing efficiency rating of 152.60 which ranks him second in the league and 15th in the nation in this category.
"He's just getting better and better. He's really coming on. He made some great throws again tonight," Kidd said.
All three Colonel runningbacks figured in the scoring. Senior tailback Derick Logan led all Eastern rushers with 125 yards in just 10 carries and set up Eastern's last TD with a 73-yard run that took the ball down to the three-yard line. Junior tailback Corey Crume gained 95 yards in 21 carries and scored on a two-yard run, while freshman fullback Chad Culver tasted the end zone for the first time in college, scoring on a seven-yard run to open scoring for the game.
Defensively, senior strong safety Scooter Asel topped Eastern tacklers with 12 solo tackles, four assists and an interception, while freshman cornerback Yeremiah Bell, who was named OVC Newcomer of the Week, had eight tackles, five assists and two tackles for loss. Senior defensive tackle Terry Thomas and senior linebacker Brad Folke each collected 11 hits.
